<p>
In early 2018, Teckids e.V. carried out a survey on the use of social media among 574 students. The survey has been designed by Niels Hradek (13 years) and Philipp Stahl (14 years), conducted by many children and adolescents in their schools and classes and evaluated mainly by Tim Valentin (11 years).

<h3>
Abstract of the results
</h3>
<p>
The objectives of this survey were to know what services are being used, how to use instant messaging and social networking, whether the terms of service are known, whether participants are interested in what happens to their data, who or what brought them to use those services and whether they are interested in contributing to the services they use.
</p>
<p>
The survey was mostly conducted in grammar schools, but also in other secondary schools of the German school system.
</p>
<p>
574 students took part in the survey. Learners from the 7th or 8th grade (54%) represent the majority in the survey. Few of the participants were in the 4th to 6th grade (24%) and a few were in the 9th or 10th grade or in the 2nd grade (10%).
</p>
<p>
Unfortunately, the survey is not scientifically representative, as 86% of the participants attend a grammar school and therefore the other school types in the German system are not equally represented. However, as the results of individual subgroups are very similar, a representativeness of the results can be assumed.
</p>
<p>
According to our evaluation, almost all the students use WhatsApp (94%) and YouTube (91%). But Instagram (57%), Musical.ly (25%) and Snapchat (56%) are also frequently used. This result is similar to other surveys we looked at before: Despite poor data protection, WhatsApp is still the most widely used messenger service.
</p>
<p>
Many participants say that they use instant messaging and social networking to stay in touch and get information for school. Most of them only skimmed the terms of use and one third of the respondents did not care to read them carefully. That is not so good, because you should know exactly what personal information is being used by someone else. Nevertheless, the vast majority of respondents find it bad that their data is purposefully collected, then analyzed and later sold or otherwise reused.
</p>
<p>
Many children were brought in contact with these services by friends or classmates. Parents also have a big impact on the choice and use of social media, while schools seem more likely to promote the use of the most widely distributed messenger in the learning group.
</p>
<p>
It is important for them that they can chat quickly and easily with their friends. Private text messages, photo messages, voice messages, and occasionally voice and video calls are often used. On the other hand, public status posts and publicly posted photos are becoming increasingly rare.
</p>
<p>
Most young people first think about who should see the content and whether the content should be on the Internet. That is very good, because if you accidentally post something, the internet will never forget it. Almost all respondents knew exactly who they should ask before putting something on the net (for example, in photos of others). That is good as you can be held responsible if you put somebody else on the net without first asking him.
</p>
<p>
85% of the students voluntarily chose to take part in a special group chat of the class, which could be found at all of the participants' schools.
</p>
<p>
More than half of the respondents have heard of the term Free Software before. It is a pity that so far only 10% use this software, but two-thirds would like to be able to co-design social media.
</p>
<p>
We can conclude from this that many children and adolescents use the chosen, mostly proprietary and insecure, services only because they do not know or have an adequate free alternative. Data protection and their rights and participation are very important to them, but opportunities and alternatives need to be better designed and brought to schools and learners.
</p>

Unfortunately, our services went offline on Saturday, 2nd of March, due to a reboot of our infrastructure for reasons that are currently still unknown. At this point in time, all administrators were on holiday trips and had no access to the encryption passphrases securing our users' data, which is stored offline.

<p>
We will be reconsidering our emergency plans, including quick response to incidents during such times as holiday seasons.

On Saturday they went to the university, where the Linux Days took place. We had many interesting conversations with the visitors. Two of our team members were at a lecture about Micropython, which we are using, and its hardware and software options. They were also in a lecture about Bash, a free Unix shell. There they were able to learn how pipes, pointed clings and scripts are working. Later on that day they went to the social event, where they were able to talk to the coordinators and exhibitors.

On Sunday morning they were preparing the game development workshop for children, in which the 12 participants were able to learn how they can code 2D games. This was done by experimenting with code examples. They learned basic concepts about coding with Python and PyGame. The participants were surprised about the possibility to code games without any programming experiences. They want to continue code on their games at home.

<br/>
</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>

<p>
On the weekend of December 14th and 15th the last workday for this year took place, this time followed by a Christmas party at tarent. As always, the workdays serve to prepare and plan future events that the club organizes or in which it participates.
</p>
<p>
This weekend, the participating club members met at 11 a.m. at Haus Venusberg, where they spent the first day and night of the workday. After a short meeting in the morning, the members split up into the general teams: FOSS, Organization, PR and System Administration to continue working on their tasks. After a short lunch break, during which the children had the opportunity to go geocaching, work continued until dinner. After dinner there was a special offer for the children: a visit to the Bonn Christmas Market. So we took the bus to Bonn city center where the group was divided into two smaller groups to search for Christmas presents, crêpes and hot cocoa.

<p>
After the group returned to Haus Venusberg, the children could play card games and sing karaoke before going to bed. Early the next morning the group met for breakfast and then headed to Tarent to spend the second day of the weekend. Unlike usual, Sunday was not used to work in the workshop teams: creative, mechatronics and game programming. Instead, a tutor held a workshop introducing Python for new members and members of the creative team. The other kids worked on their tasks or baked cookies for the christmas party that took place in the afternoon for the members and their families. After the successful completion of the workshop, the two groups came together again to make the final preparations for the christmas party: children's punch and hot chocolate were cooked and cookies and tangerines were distributed on the tables. After the official opening of the celebration, homemade cookies were eaten, christmas music was listened to and some played table soccer. Presents were exchanged and the members were happy about radios, board games and books and the workday ended in a cozy atmosphere with christmas music and punch.

The workday, which took place from 19th to 21st June, was the first workday organised after the easing of security measures. The main goal of this workday was to bring forward the organisation of FrogLabs, under consideration of the health regulations. Due to the cancellation of FrOSCon, which would normally have taken place on 22nd and 23rd August , an alternative had to be planned. The FrogLabs are going to take place on two different dates this year to reduce the size of the group. In addition, the workshops were changed and adapted to the current events.
</p>
<p>
Unlike usual, the workday did not start on Saturday morning, but on Friday afternoon. As from 4 p.m. , the participants were able to arrive at the campground and set up their tents. In the evening there was a barbecue and later in the evening they could relax, listening to music by the campfire.
</p>
<p>
Early the next morning there was breakfast, before the members got together in their teams and developed possible workshop concepts. The distribution of the tutors into workshop teams differed somewhat from the usual teams. Although the ideas developed in a similar direction, there were tutors who took part in the organisation of new workshops that had not been conducted so far. Each team presented two ideas for the lunch plenary, which were to be further elaborated during further work phases.

Leisure activities were planned for Saturday afternoon, and after a short lunch, the team split into two groups. While a smaller group played an escaperoom, the other group visited the exhibition "Gameskultur in Deutschland - Meilensteine" at +Deutsches Museum in Bonn. After the return of the two groups to the campground the teams went into another shorter work phase before everyone gathered for dinner. Afterwards, just like the evening before, most of them sat together at the campfire listening to music.
</p>
<p>
On Sunday morning, after breakfast, the groups went back to work to elaborate their concepts in detail, resolve open questions and create examples. During a longer lunch break, the participants had the opportunity to go geocaching. After a final phase of work, all the results were presented. Finally, the tutors took down their tents and the workday ended at 6 pm.

In order to model the real congress as well as possible, some elements of the event were implemented as 2D maps so that the participants could meet for a traditional group photo, for example. This also gave rise to the opportunity for creative use of WorkAdventure, the software with which this 2D world was implemented.
</p>
<p>
The rC3 also offered the opportunity to attend various talks and workshops, for example on the subject of encryption or software in public administration, but also on the digitization of schools. There was also the opportunity to exchange ideas about the school information system

willkommen!
{% end %}

* Frühstück ab etwa 9 Uhr, mit Brötchen, Aufschnitt, Rührei, Müsli
* Snacks während des ganzen Tages (Obst, Rohkost, Kekse, Studentenfutter)
* Nachmittagsüberraschung
* Warmes Abendessen (z.B. Nudeln, selbstgemachte Pizza oder Grillen)
